Please Hear the Truth Before You Decide 9/8/2006 The Long Beach Press Telegram has done a shameful job of covering the case of Long Beach Animal Control’s raid and seizure of Noah’s Ark. This is an issue that affects all southland rescues.
The mark of
a civilized society is demonstrated by how we care for our
children, our elderly and OUR ANIMALS. Please take a moment
to read the following and determine for yourself if there is
more to this story.
I have also
provided source phone numbers for you so that you contact
other folks to verify the information provided on both sides
of the story.
I think you
will find it difficult to deny that there is a bigger story
here.
Consider:
q
Why did Lt. Quigley tell
the Press Telegram that Animal Control has not been
“allowed” inside Noah’s Ark, that they were kept to the
front sidewalk? Isn’t this what the taxpayers pay Animal
Control to do? Why would Noah’s Ark have this kind of power
to deny Animal Control access to their facility?
q
Why did Officer Estrada not
cite Noah’s Ark for any problems on his August 10 visit?
According to Lt. Quigley, the conditions were so deplorable
on August 23 it would be remarkable that Officer Estrada
would not have noticed something. Isn’t this what Officer
Estrada is paid by the taxpayers to be on the look out for?
q
In fact, Animal Control was
inside Noah’s Ark almost every week. In fact, a complaint
was filed with the City Attorney Robert Shannon and head of
Animal Control Wesley Moore regarding Officer Estrada’s
visit on August 10 when he hurt a Noah’s Ark dog while
INSIDE our facility. He also physically shoved one of our
volunteers. This complaint was also copied to the whole
rescue community who are not unfamiliar with the Long Beach
Animal Control’s typically unfriendly practices.
q
During Lt. Quigley’s raid, why were the
volunteers tazered? Why were a 70-year old and young people
who volunteer forced to the cement and laid spread eagle?
q
How is it possible that a call to investigate
a smell and barking dogs was a coordinated raid with media,
helicopters and every city dept including fire department,
code enforcement, office of environmental heath, office of
health and safety etc.? It was so well orchestrated, it was
so convenient.
q
Why did Lt. Quigley schedule another photo op
with the “severely matted dogs “being cleaned up” 9 days
after seizure? If they were in such bad condition, why did
Animal Control neglect them for 9 days. Long Beach Animal
Control says their condition was dire, but they were allowed
to leave them in this so-called dire condition. In fact,
many of these animals were pets that had recently arrived or
were just recovering from illnesses and scheduled for
grooming.
q
Why is Alex Kyrklund
depicted as a hoarder? What hoarder adopts out over 2,400
pets last year? Why are most hoarders given 10 days to come
into compliance but Noah’s Ark’s pets were confiscated? Why
did Lt. Quigley enlist Noah’s Ark’s help when she recently
removed animals from a hoarder’s home, asking them to house
many of the animals.
q
Why did Long Beach Animal Control FIGHT so
hard for the right to kill?
Judge Judith
Vander Lans lifted the restraining order that kept the
animals alive; so they have won that right – the killing
will begin – time is running out for these animals. Long
Beach Animal Control is not required to update the judge
until October 23.
q
Why did they deny FREE
medical treatment for these animals by their own licensed
vet – who works with Long Beach Animal Control and also
knows Noah’s Ark and its work. This vet stepped up to offer
free treatment to prevent euthanizing – and after Noah's
Ark won the right via a restraining order to have him make
the final call – he was harassed, given wrong contact phone
numbers for the vets who are overseeing the animals and
threatened by the AC to step aside or lose his contract.
q
A majority of these pets
were already set to be destroyed by Animal Control – so why
would they now be any different in their eyes – they are
already deemed unworthy of life. If so many were as sick and
on deaths beds as they claim, why didn’t any die? Why were
only 12 at the vet’s office? Noah’s Ark already 12 in their
ISO room for treatment; these animals were already under
treatment.
q
These pets were left
without cleaning and care for over 36 hours while they were
being seized. Noah’s Ark volunteers were arriving to begin
the morning cleaning routines when Lt. Quigley staged her
raid. None of our volunteers were allowed to clean – they
were threatened with arrest if they stuck around. Is it
hard to imagine that these pets will look like they were
living in deplorable conditions after so many hours of
jumping around, frightened of strangers, spilling their
water buckets and food dishes, running through feces and
urine that are a natural occurrence after an overnight AND
36 hours. (Note: most of Noah’s Ark’s animals live cage
free if they like so that they may curl up together – a
progressive animal care stance that is well-supported in
animal behavioral science.)
q
Long Beach Animal Control now sits on a
slippery slope. If the animals are presented now and look
good – then they were adoptable all along. If the animals
look bad, Long Beach Animal Control is not providing the
care they need. They NEED to euthanize these animals!
Without a restraining order, they can begin doing so.
q
Ed Boks, General Manager of
Los Angeles’ Animal Services, and a local vet offered to
house and care for the animals FREE OF CHARGE. After they
were photographed, their utility as evidence is fulfilled.
Noah’s Ark agreed to this. Wesley Moore and the city’s
attorney refused the offer. In fact, they told James
Blancarte, the attorney for the animals, “No way, we’ll see
you in court!”
This is a
witchhunt as retribution for a whistleblowing, no-kill
rescue that makes them look bad on a daily basis – last year
Noah’s Ark alone placed over 2400 homeless pets, and other
rescues did the same or more. How many did Long Beach
Animal Control kill?
This is not
about the neglect or abuse- this as about money.
Every pet
they have is worth roughly 100 dollars per day in impound
fees – and in order to get them out those fees have to be
paid or they become property of Animal Control and can be
‘disposed of as they deem fit.”
This is
financial black mail.
This is
win-win for them – either way Long Beach Animal Control gets
paid – their “informal court hearing” to determine what
should be done is in their office and the judge is an Animal
Control officer. In other words, the wolf has been assigned
to watch the hen house.
This story
is indicative of the story of rescues and municipal Animal
Control agencies. California often leads the way in our
humanitarian and legislative efforts. But when it comes to
animal CARE and control, parts of our state are in the dark
ages. Long Beach Animal Control is the epitome of those
dark ages. It’s hard to imagine that the beautiful new SPCA
facility has many empty cages while next door animals
arriving at Animal Control must be euthanized if they are
not immediately adoptable because they have no room. No one
from the general public is able to monitor the animals, Long
Beach Animal Control does not have to account to anyone for
their euthanization.
The animals
Noah’s Ark takes in are special needs and elderly pets.
They need more time than the city shelter can give them to
find a home. Rescues provide time and waystation. It’s not
a country club but it is a second chance. Enjoy the
attached slideshow to see the faces of animals Noah’s Ark
has given a second chance. Many of them are now in Long
Beach Animal Control’s care.

QUESTION: WHY DO (SOME) PEOPLE JUDGE BY ONLY MEDIA
REPORTS?
From what I know, Noah’s Ark is a big place to house so many "unwanted",
and "special needs", cats/dogs that were slated for immediate euthanasia
by the LA City/County shelters. All of these poor animals cannot be
pulled by rescue and so many die (I have the stats if you want them).
Animals coming into a shelter with critical medical conditions, orphaned
kittens/puppies, cats/dogs labeled as so-called "bad temperaments"
(would not we humans have bad temperaments if we were caged in a cold
kennel?) are certain to be killed (unless a rescue is allowed to get to
them in time or at all) by our high kill shelters. Have you or anyone on
CL who is forming such negative opinions against Noah's Ark went to
their website? Have you been to their facility? I believe that they are
also open seven days a week – nearly all rescue groups are not lucky
enough to be able to do that. Isn’t a “no-kill” facility a wonderful
thing? Do you realize that they also adopt animals out to homes that
they will have love & a forever home?
It is my understanding that these kennels are cleaned at least twice a
day and if you think about it, the number of dogs & kennels, with the
help of volunteers - this seems sufficient.
In no way do I believe any of these animals went without food or water
nor do I believe that all water/food dishes were filthy. Possibly a few
(I am guessing) - dogs & especially puppies can get a water dish dirty
within minutes of it being cleaned & holding fresh water. The media
showed pictures of some dogs that did look terrible, but they arrive
from the shelters that way – figures those are the images that appear on
then news or newspapers. It does take a little time to make sure
all-important issues are taken care of first and if they arrive at a low
weight, it takes time to build that weight up to normal.
The question was brought up about the animals "going immediately to the
Vet”, but, because some dogs are not people friendly, or not
approachable, that a few days could go by, with the fur matted and if
you know long hair animals there is a huge problem with feces getting on
the fur unless the back area is shaved.
I feel confident enough to say that a) it is better to allow the animal
to trust the person before putting it thru' a traumatic event right on
top of another (being pulled from the shelters) and b) that the # of
these animals are the minority.
Have any of you who have judged in such a negative manner have the
knowledge that this news is traveling all over the US? The support
behind Noah's Ark will be tremendous and hopefully, it will put an end
to what some of the Long Beach City Shelter staff created. If these
animals are held for at least a year as quoted by Quigley herself, some
will die as they need the medical attention they “were” receiving, many
are senior animals just looking for someone to love them and just like
putting humans in nursing homes, this certainly will have some effect on
the spirit of some of these animals. It is time for the people to stand
up against shelters who have a vendetta and I hope that everyone will
educate themselves on this entire issue and help the animals get back to
Noah's Ark from the Animal Shelters where so many were rescued from -
the animals need YOU. Think about the certain deaths of the "normal"
numbers of animals that will be coming into this shelter everyday - they
are sure to be killed much earlier in the game all because shelters and
many people think rescues are a bad thing. There are good & bad but I
can assure you that the good rescues certainly outweigh the bad ones.
Noah's Ark has nothing to do with hoarders either - they make every
effort to adopt out as many of the animals that they can.

Hi
Friends-
8/25/06
Thanks to all who called the media. There was quite a bit of
coverage of the rescuers' side of this story today. Thanks
especially to those who came to the hearing . It was very hard
to sit and listen to the lies and misrepresentations being
spouted by the LB City attorney without being able to dispute
anything she said. It was a constant stream of pure bs. BUT we
had a couple of wonderful attorneys (Thank you so much, Jennifer
Pryor!!!) and a rational judge found in favor of ordering a
temporary injunction whereby the vets contracted by LB AC must
contact Noah's Arks' vet (who has offered to treat the animals
free of charge!) if they deem any animal that was seized from
Noah's Ark should be euthanized. It's a small victory and it was
fought tooth and nail by LB AC and the LB city attorney but the
injunction is supposed to hold for 14 days. One step at a time.
There will be more hearings and continued support will be
needed.
I
must give major kudos to LAAS GM Ed Boks. He showed up at 8am
and spoke in defense of the animals to the press. When we were
told there would be a change of venue from LB to San Pedro, he
got in his car and drove to San Pedro and stayed through the
entire hearing (it lasted until 3PM) His presence lent
credibility to our side of the case especially with the press. I
must say I was very impressed. He stood up for the animals and
the rescue community and that scores him a lot of points in my
book.
If any of you have pictures and stories of animals that went to
Noah's Ark please send them to me. We want evidence of the
condition these animals were in before they went to Noah's Ark.
AC is trying to portray Noah's Ark as having "sick, emaciated"
etc animals but what they are not telling the public and the
court is that THAT IS HOW THESE ANIMALS CAME IN!
Thanks and best wishes-
Periel

Subject: Pound confiscated all Noah's Ark's animals!
This is urgent. Weeks a go Alex of Noah’s Ark filed a complaint with the Long
beach City Attorney. Then today Long Beach “raids” Noh’s Ark. Coincidence?!
The Long Beach Pound will most likely kill any of the animals they want without
a hold by claiming them as being “ill”. They don’t want to feed and care for
the animals and it helps their case if they can say they HAD to kill b/c they
were ill. This means animals like Tippi may be murdered without even considering
that she had surgery recently and is actually healing (see photos I have
attached to this email). Alex has taken so many seniors and so many who have
required surgery. Those are the ones the pound will quickly put into
“unadoptable” or even “ill” categories. I have had personal interaction with
Officer Quigley who they say is in charge of this and this officer is not a
person who is on the side of the animals.
These animals’ lives are at risk now! Please call Long Beach ASAP at
562-570-7387 and please contact all the names of the people below. Please
please take the time to write to everyone of these officials. Also contact Lisa
Siegal at KCAL (323-467-9999) and ask her to tell the other side of the story.
Demand that they tell the other side at least.
P.S. Does anyone else find it amazing that the scandals at the pounds never seem
to make it on the news? Who is it who calls the news for this? It must be
someone at the pound who sees this as an opportunity.

Hi Friends-
I'm sorry if you are getting this as a duplicate. I just got
back from picking up our last South L.A leftover from spaying
and heard the terrible news about Noah's Ark on the radio then
got home and got several emails. This seems to be the latest
one. If you are not aware of the situation, please read the
email from the bottom up.
We are being asked to call the Long Beach shelter (I guess we'll
have to call tomorrow am OR you could send a fax anytime as the
fax number is listed too) and politely ask that the seized dogs
be released to other rescues/fosters. Many of the dogs that were
seized are senior and special needs dogs. Alex, the head of
Noah's Ark has been the last hope of many dogs who no one else
would take. It would be such a tragedy to see them killed.
Please help. Donations are being accepted through Jennifer
Pryor.

Update on Noah's
Ark and Long Beach Animal Control
Long Beach Animal Control is seizing all the animals.
There are approx. 100 dogs and 150 cats.
PLS DO NOT go down to Noah's Ark and attempt to get
your animals. They will not be released to you.
A restraining order has been put on the animals by
Alex's attorney. For now the animals will not be killed. They are being held as
evidence at the Long Beach Shelter.
There is a possibility that anyone who bailed a dog out
for Alex under their own group or name will be able to redeem the animal from
Long Beach Shelter. I will have more details on that later.
Additionally, I am hoping to have a complete list of
all the animals who originated from LAAS. I will e mail a list with impound
numbers and/or names of animals as soon as I get it.
Alex and the animals need your help. Long Beach
shelter is an extremely HIGH KILL SHELTER. As such, the animals will need to be
rescued the moment they are released as evidence and become available. If you
have any room pls help by taking one or two into your rescue.
I will follow up with descriptions of the animals when
I have a complete list.
Thank you
Pnina
Subject: Noah's Ark and
Long Beach Animal Control: CALL THE NEWS
Dear Animal World:
KCAL 9 news' Lisa Segal just did a fluff piece on this terrible tragedy. I do
not know Noah's ARk but i know one thing, these 250 animals are not better of in
the Long Beach Pound. They are HIGH kill, they hate feral cats (personal
experience) and they will make any excuse to kill these angels.
What Ms Segal did not present or know i assume, is that:
1. Maybe Noah's Ark JUST got these animals out of the pound, streets etc and
that is why they look so bad.
2. That the Long Beach Pound (I refuse to call them a shelter) did not have to
take all 250 animals like gung ho cowboys. They could have easily told her to
have a moratorium on taking in animals and could have told her to clean up her
act. But no, at taxpayers' expense, they took everyone.
3. WHAT we forget is that the POUND is no better and the pound's solution is
killing. In this day and age, we say NO to killing healthy and treatable
animals.
I saw many, many many beautiful dogs being walked out of there and they looked
great. There was no suffering there. maybe they lived in a cage for now but as
for their physical health, they were in good shape, better than the pound i
might add.
So I BEG you to nicely call Lisa Segal at KCAL 9 NEWS and ask her to interview
those of us know the REAL truth.
Please call KCAL 9 Lisa Segal 323-467-9999 Ask the newsdesk for the
comments line. PLEASE include my points.
And also call the Long Beach Pound and tell them how you feel. Tell them they
should have worked with her, not taken all her dogs and cats at huge taxpayers'
expense and animal suffering.

Subject: HELP!!! NEED MEDIA QUICK!!![Fwd: 911! NOAH'S ARK'S ANIMALS SEIZED BY POLICE: RESCUERS PLEASE HELP: TIPPI AT RISK!!]
Of UTMOST urgency! !! Many poor dogs,
as well as the survival of the entire rescue community are at risk!
If we ever needed it, now is the time to call in any media contacts to put
pressure on Long Beach Shelter for their fascist raid on poor Alex, the rescuer
who saved and rehabilitated little "Tippi", that dog with the tumor on her head
that you helped us with before. This is sheer retaliation (see attached
history) from someone who adopted a dog from
her, then wanted to euthanize it, rather than give it back to Alex. Alex called
the police for help - not only did they not help her, now they are joining the
retaliation and /harming/ her and the animals! If we can't expose this, and
reverse the travesty, this will be allowed to happen to ALL rescuers; unchecked;
at any moment!!
If you can think of anything to do or anyone to call........???
Thanks,
Mad
